Well– [ Thinking back, she's startled to find a memory surfacing. Slowly, Rapunzel sits up and scoots to the edge of the plush couch, staring at the blank plasma screen. ]
There was... one. A book. Mother said it was water damaged so we had to throw it out. It was about - people. Other people being together. I don't know if that's what you mean but - I think there was a princess.
[ It's then that Pascal decides to wander out from wherever he'd been hiding this whole time, yawning and stumbling his way to Weiss's foot rather than Rapunzel's because it's new and looks cozy as hell. ]
[Throw out the book? She thought Rapunzel's mother was controlling, but not wanting her to read? That's just... well, a lot of things really, but she'll settle for "disgusting".]
Well its kinda like that. The guy takes the girl out on a date as an attempt to impress her. Things like expensive dinners, trips to the carnival, anything that gets the two of them alone.
[The carnival might be something on her mind. She's seen the posters, and she can't help but be interested. As shabby as it might seem, she's never been before. Could be fun.]
Jaune was always trying these dopey stunts to get my attention, I never really understood what he wa-- aaah!
[What is that crawling up her foot?! At first she thought it was just the wind, but its not going anywhere! And it's green! FLINGING YOU NOW grossgrossogrossgrossgross]
[ AAAAAAAnd Pascal goes flying into one of the pillows. Hitting it and landing on the straw chair beneath with a bounce. Luckily he's pretty resilient when it comes to low-level gross-out flings and rather than being hurt he just seems resentful. A clicking sound - the chameleon's answer to a growl - comes out as, huffing, he stomps back to the couch to sit next to Rapunzel instead, glaring daggers at Weiss as if nothing happened. ]
[ Rapunzel isn't paying any attention to any of this. She's staring at her hands because the world has frozen around her and her body has gone numb, cool and hot at once. ]
Because... because he likes you. [ That's what she remembers from the book her mother destroyed, speaking to Rapunzel with cold, hard words that romance was a waste of time, a deceptive trick that could feel like joy but which ultimately always lead to agony.
If a person makes you feel like gold and happiness - "shining and full of airy bubbles" - it means you like them.
If you like them, you're supposed to spend time with them, and then kiss them to show them that you care.
That's the extent of what she remembers from the book about romance and the extent of Gothel's instruction. That's what she knows about love. ]
She's gotten it all wrong! So what if Jaune asked Weiss to a carnival? (He didn't.) She'd probably ask other people too if she got the chance! Probably, she'd even ask Weiss! That's all right, isn't it?
It... doesn't mean he doesn't like her too. Right? ]
Two weeks. [ Probably? Man, telling time sure is a challenge when you're not staring at a clock for 24 hours a day. Everything happens so quickly! And so much of it at once!
She sighs; from the dazed expression it's clear her thoughts are elsewhere. ] And - ugh - what does it matter how long we've known each other? I've known him longer than I've known anybody else before. You too. [ Yeah because you've never KNOWN ANYBODY. ]
I– [ This is such a surprise. Her mouth opens and closes a few times before Rapunzel looks away, staring once again at the plasma screen in shock. Pascal, for his part, narrows one eye at Weiss, the other growing maniacally large in a menacing leer.
When, at last, she trusts herself and her composure with a response, it's matter-of-fact: ]
Since when is knowing everything about someone a prerequisite for caring about them? [ Her trust issues are deeply impaired in one sense, yes. But miraculously they don't inform her ability to reach out to others. Much like Jaune, she's channeled her fear of rejection into manic friendliness rather than frostiness. ]
Besides. [ Her face is serious and her tone is cool. Though her face is not. She wonders if Jaune would be proud of her for this next bit, spoken as she stands, smooths her impractically short robe down, and walks breezily to the kitchenette for the tea pot. ] You're too late. I'm already fawning.
And - honestly? I'd be more worried if I didn't like him. Jaune's a great guy, Weiss. I get the feeling people decide on their opinions about him before ever getting to know who he actually is.

Date: 2016-01-27 07:24 am (UTC)Did you... ever read any stories when you were little? Maybe a prince wooing a princess? It's kind of like that.
But less dramatic mostly.
