I wasn't going to hit that hard. My hands are my livelihood.
[ Jen moves closer, but sits a bit further away because, yes, it's still weird and she doesn't feel as if she deserves that spot. ] You've dealt with this longer. I'm sure you've experimented a bit with how it works for you. Or, at least, I'm hoping you have.
[ Jen shakes her head, looking absolutely confused besides. ] No, see. I can still use my Semblance, but I'm not protected from getting hurt in the process. That's what I was going to show you.
I don't... know what "aura" is except in the new age-y kind of way. Or what you just said. [ she furrows her brow. ] I think we found my problem.
[ is it her fault that their experiences and memories are different? no. so that's what keeps her listening patiently because, as expected, Vera's practically an expert compared to her. ]
Boy, I'm glad I asked you. Because I was sure I was going to have to knock myself out or worse to figure out how to make it work.
[ a beat. ] You're sure they're not ... separate? If I have one, I should have the other. Right? [ a deeper frown, though. ] If they're a package deal then it makes even less sense that it's not working.
[ Jen sinks into the cushions with a sigh, head back and eyes closed. ]
So, it's like I said. It's broken. Great!
[ she turned her head toward Vera and opened her eyes once more. ] How did you figure yours out? I know they're different but, like, there should be something in common... right?
[ hold the phone for one damn second! Jen bolts upright with her hands on her knees, and turns toward Vera, eyes wide. ] You were hit by a car?! When?! Holy shit, Vera, why didn't you tell me before?
[ is this information "Yin" had while offline? who knows. if Jen did know about it she had somehow managed to forget it. no wonder Vera didn't want her to go toward extremes. ]
It is... not as dramatic as it sounds. I was leaving the coffee shop when a car pulled out of the parking lot. They did not see me. I maybe would have broken some ribs, but it would not have killed me.
[She looks away shyly. It's difficult to admit vulnerability like that, and it doesn't help that Jen would show this level of concern for her.]
We did not want to make a big deal of it. The more eyes looking, the more likely it was going to end up in magazines.
[ Vera was being rather casual about delivering that information. from a girl who probably couldn't handle spraining her ankle or dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome, to just calmly go "it would not have killed me"? ] Just break a few ribs? Jesus Christ... That's pretty dramatic!
[ she put her hand to her forehead and took a few deep breaths. it was in the past, so there's no sense reeling from the news any longer. ] Well, I'm glad you were okay in the end. I don't know what I would have done.
What you would have done? [Vera turns to look at her friend.] I didn't think you would be as concerned as you are.
[She knows that they're friends, maybe even... good friends? But still, outside of a few lucky paparazzi, would anyone really care so much that a billionaire business mogul had to spend a couple days at the hospital?]
[ a couple of days? Vera has clearly no grasp of just how painful even some minor rib fractures can be. leave it to the former football player to have to fill in the blanks. ] Why wouldn't I be?
[ Jen could actually probably answer that question for herself. or she could, if Vera was still at all sour about the last thing they spoke about. she chewed on the words a moment, along with her bottom lip. she started fiddling with her hair a bit, too. both as a nervous tick but also as she's still getting used to how much longer it was. even the texture was somehow a bit different. but that could just be in her mind. ]
Look, I know... I said a lot of things that upset you last time. I'm really sorry about that. I had no right to make comments like that. But - and this is no excuse - I think I was just also upset because of you just kind of... downplaying how important she seemed to you. [ Jen shook her head. ] Not just your personal relationship, but... something else you said before. A dream, where you saw someone who looked like her fighting alongside the rest of us. Team RWBY.
[She sighs. Do we really need to go here again? Yes, Jen was apologizing, but Vera really, really didn't like talking about Victoria. She misses her so much, and even though she left nearly a year ago, some part of her is still reeling, feeling lost and abandoned.]
Y-yes, I... [I loved her.] I do not know her name, but there was no mistaking that woman in my dreams was Victoria. Her face, her voice, her body, it was all the same. I wish I could have had more time to talk to her about these things.
Right. Me too. [ there's no doubting that Vera and Weiss had their similarities too, from what she remembered, but this may not be a time to bring it up since a good many of those things were less than positive. Jen wants to give Vera the benefit of the doubt regarding her personality in that other life, since even she hasn't seen everything there is to know about Yang to make a clear judgement call on what she's like all the time.
that wasn't the important part anyway. this was.
she shifted closer. ] I brought her up because I... I'd hate to think what it would be like if you left, too. Or if I had ended up leaving you. Because, whether we want to admit it or not, or do anything with it, as far as I know we're all we have in this life from that other one.
[ Jen was feeling very tense, and emotional, but was doing her damnedest to keep a level head. ] I know I'd be ... afraid, to be honest. Lost.
[It's far too late for a heart-to-heart like this, the lack of sleep making it far more difficult for her to hide her emotional state. She can feel the tension knotting on the back of her neck, and her eyes can't seem to lift themselves from the floor.]
I won't forgive you if you leave me, either. [She meant it as a joke, but it came out so cold and serious. She's lived most of her life emotionally isolated from the rest of the world, yet somehow this girl has wormed her way into her heart to the point where she just couldn't stand to let her go.]
[ there is no way to give a reassurance to Vera that it won't happen. Jen knows that. but doing this feels good and right and she is too touched by the fact that the other woman felt close to how she might if something like that had happened, so she couldn't help herself.
Jen shifted even closer, resting her left hand on Vera's shoulder with the other pushing into the cushions right by her thigh. ] I'll try not to give you another reason to be mad at me, Vera.
[ even if she cannot promise something like "I won't go anywhere" that should do to show her sincerity and intent. Jen's violet eyes will hopefully make her determination clear, too. Vera's phrasing is kind of humorous but she takes it absolutely seriously. ]
The world would be a better place if more people lived by that motto.
[She looks down at Jen's hand, then up at the blonde. It's a small gesture, and one the businesswoman usually abhors, but right now, it's comforting. Even if there was no realistic way the two could promise to always be here for one another, just their proximity gave her all the reassurance she needed.
Which is when Vera decides to stop with this inching closer nonsense, and closes the distance between the two, her head on her shoulder.]
I can think of a certain company that could definitely afford to listen to that advice. Starts with an "R". [ just so that Vera doesn't get the idea that she's referring to her corporations. though they aren't perfect by a long shot, this isn't the time to get her feelings on that culture out on the floor.
she just... calmly settles her arm around Vera's shoulders, because it just seems like the natural thing to do. another small gesture to see if they were on the way toward mending things between them or not. ]
[Either way, she'd have agreed with her. Her own company could do a lot less pissing her off as well.]
Mm... [A small yawn slips from her lips. Why did they have to meet up this late again? The warmth of the taller girl's body against her, coupled with her body's unending desire for actual sleep begins to draw Vera's eyes closed.] They seem to go out of their way to get under our skin.
[ there is something very comforting about being on the same wavelength for once. Jen could feel some of the familiar warmth on her skin as her worries melt away.
she gasps, suddenly, as she realizes that warmth was a bit more literal. ] Uh, speaking of skin. Vera do I feel... hot, to you?
Mhm... [Warm and comfortable, so much in fact she's starting to drift off. It's amazing how being with someone you trust can make it so easy for you to relax, even if she is feeling a little sweaty right now. Kind of like she's in a sauna. And someone's thrown a wool blanket over her.]
Jesus, Yang, what the fuck? [She jumps off of the taller girl, putting some distance between the two.] You're burning up!
I don't know!! [ Jen's going to kind of. gloss over the name thing for the moment. there's more important things to worry about. she looks down at her hands as if there was some kind of answer therein.
nothing looked abnormal... ] I'd say I hope I'm not getting a fever, but this? This is ridiculous.
[ then, she had a really sudden, and probably stupid idea. ] Quick. Hit me!
